This kid I went to highschool with. Posted on facebook this status of being lonely. Said something like, "Nothing makes a single guy more lonely than, ( insert some hipster garbage song)." Here's the thing. This kid's 18. Popular handsome, if he asked any girl from his school, he wouldn't be lonely for long. Anyway, I just want to grab this kid by the shoulder and force him to understand, he's not lonely. He doesn't know what loneliness is. If that happy song about two lovers makes you lonely, you won't survive. I can think of 20 things I do everyday that are more lonely than that. I can think of 20 songs sadder than that one. I can describe to this kid how it feels to be truly lonely. He knows nothing. He knows nothing of getting on a plane to fly 4000 miles away from home for half a year. He knows nothing of watching his parents drive off from the airport. Knows nothing of sleeping in airports, knows nothing of waking up in a country, with no family, no friends, no contacts, where you don't know the language, and being expected to survive. Knows nothing of writing letters full of last goodbyes, hasn't seen the tears in anyone's eyes when he tells her he's leaving. He doesn't know what its like to wake up at 3 am because he dreamed his apartment door opened because she was coming home. He doesn't know what it's like to be able to communicate only through emails, once every couple of weeks, and Skype maybe once every two months. I want to force him to understand that, yeah, he may think he's lonely. But the world could be much much more cruel to him. I want to scream it into his ear until understands. But, I remember me at his age. Every missed phone call from a friend, or a girl, meant another night alone. Meant another night alone in my car in a parking lot smoking cigarette after cigarette trying to make lonely go away. My dad once said enjoy where you are when you are there, because things almost always get harder or worse. This is where this kid is now and I won't burst his bubble, but I really think someone should.

Wow, I have to say it sounds like you have a really great head on your shoulders. And sounds like maybe the "popular kid" doesn't. On the bright side, he posted it to Facebook, meaning he wants everyone he knows to see it, and respond, so he doesn't feel lonely. The ones that don't say anything are the ones I worry about the most.
